The Magical History of The Polar Express
If you celebrate Christmas, the Polar Express is likely part of your family’s traditions. Whether it be reading the book, watching the movie together, or setting up the model train around your tree, the Polar Express has become a classic! With the publishing of the book, written by Chris Van Allsburg in 1985, and the movie releasing in 2004, the story of the train has reached the imagination of multiple generations. Many model train hobbyists have also shared the interest, building Polar Express railroads as a part of their display. So, what is the story of the Polar Express and how did it all begin?
The Story
The plot begins with a young boy who is awakened late in the night on Christmas eve to find a train, the Polar Express, waiting for him outside the house. As he boards the train, he’s surprised to find that there are already lots of other children there, ready to make the journey to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus. The magical journey begins, traveling through forests and mountains until they reach the North Pole. Upon their arrival, Santa chooses the boy to receive the first gift of Christmas, in which the boy responds that he’d like a bell from the reindeer’s harnesses. As they depart, he realizes that he’s left the bell behind. On Christmas morning, he’s thrilled to find that Santa has left him an extra present; The bell! Although the parents think it is broken, he and his sister can hear the ringing of the bell, and know the true magic of Christmas. The story of the Polar Express has become an enchanting tale told across the world.
